  1. Palm Pre Reviews

I’m not sure I’d pick a Palm Pre over the iPhone, but it’s nice to see that companies are starting to create competition for the iPhone. I guess the reality is that most phone makers were probably a little blindsided by the iPhone, and now they’re just playing catchup. To be fair, it probably also takes about 2 years to design and create a phone of this caliber, so the fact that we’re just starting to see iPhone competitors shouldn’t really be surprising. 2. Netbook Operating Systems

Over the past three months, I've spent some time using a number of different operating systems for use on my Lenovo S10 netbook. Thus far I have tried the following: Ubuntu 8.04 Ubuntu Netbook Remix Good OS (gOS) Windows XP (this is what my netbook came with) Windows Vista Windows 7 Beta I'd love to write up something reviewing each of these in depth, but I just don't have the time. Instead, I'll offer up a few basic, point-form comments. 3. Windows 7 Secrets

Tim Sneath has posted a great collection of Windows 7 Secrets . I've been running Windows 7 Beta myself and absolutely loving it so far. Tim's list has just made me enjoy the experience all the more. I especially like the "vertical maximize" feature (Win+Shift+Up/Down) as well as the fact that all window management functionality is now available through keyboard shortcuts, including the ability to move windows between multiple monitors.

  4. gOS

http://www.thinkgos.com/index.php gOS has a number of different linux distributions geared towards low powered computers. It seems as though these would be be well suited for netbooks. I'm going to give these a try.

  7. WePC

WePC is an initiative by ASUS and sponsored by Intel (and maybe others) to collect PC design ideas and feedback from PC users (that's you!). It sounds interesting at a high level, and I'll definately get around to submitting something myself, but for now most of the submission are a little, shall we say, ludicrous, and unlikely to be implemented. It's a great idea on many levels, and I think this is something we can expect to see more and more of in the long run, but you need to start off right away setting appropriate expectation levels. Dell provides a great case in point. My understanding is...

  8. Lenovo IdeaPad S10

I've been interested in purchasing a netbook for some time now. After taking a long time to review all of the various netbooks currently available, including the ASUS EeePC (and it's 10,000 different versions), the MSI Wind , the Acer Aspire One , the HP MiniNote , and the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 , I've decided to go with the Lenovo IdeaPad S10 (what, no Wikipedia link!). The biggest factors (apart from the rave reviews) are the excellent, above average keyboard, and a really high built quality that is receiving very high ratings. Many reviewers compare the build quality to that of the Lenovo ThinkPad...

  10. Server Infrastructure Upgrade

I just purchased an HP ProLiant 1U rackmount server to add to my server infrastructure. The system is a fantastic value, as it includes two Intel Quad Core Xeon 2.66Ghz processors, 4GB ECC RAM, and two 250GB SATA drives. With my HP discount, total cost is just under $1000 CDN shipped. That's just an incredible value. Of course, relatively weak US currency didn't hurt :-) This system will be setup as my new primary web server, and the existing web server ( Dell PowerEdge 750 ) will become a backup web server. The existing database server ( Dell PowerEdge 1850 ) will remain the same. Full disclosure...
